I've been thinking lately about how we've turned "love your neighbor" into a bumper sticker. It's one of those phrases we say so often in church that it's lost its edge. Jesus said it's the second greatest commandment, right after loving God. But what does it actually mean?

It Starts with Proximity

Neighbors aren't abstract concepts. They're the people next to you. The guy across the hall who plays music too loud. The family down the street whose lawn you judge. The coworker who talks during your focus time.

The Samaritan in Jesus's parable didn't love his neighbor from a distance. He got close to someone bleeding in a ditch. Close enough to smell the blood, to touch the wounds, to interrupt his day completely.

It Costs Something

Real love always costs something. Time. Money. Convenience. Comfort.

When we reduce "loving our neighbors" to being polite or voting a certain way, we miss the point. Jesus didn't say "be nice to your neighbors." He said love them.

That means the single mom down the street might need you to watch her kids on short notice. Your elderly neighbor might need a ride to the doctor, and you'll have to leave work early. The refugee family at church might need help navigating systems you take for granted.

It's Not Conditional

Here's where it gets uncomfortable: we don't get to choose which neighbors qualify. The Good Samaritan didn't check the wounded man's theology or politics first. He just helped.

Your neighbor is whoever's in front of you. Full stop.

I don't have this figured out. I fail at it constantly. But this commandment—this call to love the people right next to us—is one of the most radical things Jesus ever said.

It's not cheesy. It's just hard.
